In reality, family life is rarely quiet or tidy. Instead, it’s emotional, loud, exhausting, joyful and full of moments that feel small at the time, yet later mean everything. From one moment to the next, celebrations range from the first successful poop in the potty to the huge milestones like first steps or that first independent bike ride. Because of this constant change, family life becomes a collection of fleeting moments that deserve to be remembered. Ultimately, it’s that mix of chaos and love that makes it so special.

For nearly ten years now, I’ve been photographing families as an Edinburgh family photographer. Alongside my own family — two daughters and a pup — I’ve worked with hundreds of families across Edinburgh and Scotland. Over time, what continues to draw me in is real life as it unfolds. Rather than perfection or posing, I focus on connection, emotion and the everyday moments that pass far too quickly.

Often, that might look like pizza making in the kitchen, painting at the table, playing board games filled with excitement, or simply reading a book together on the sofa. As those moments unfold, cuddles, kisses, laughter and a little bit of chaos naturally follow. In the end, these ordinary moments become something incredibly precious.

It’s a cliché, but it’s true — these moments don’t last. Today, my older daughter is ten, and I’ve documented her life since the day she was born. For her tenth birthday, I created an album filled with memories from her early years. Within those pages are moments she no longer remembers and expressions that belong to a younger version of herself. When she looked through it, she said, “Mum, that’s the most precious present I could have got.” With time, I know it will only become more meaningful as she grows older.
