Edinburgh Wedding Photographer – Ghillie Dhu

Ghillie Dhu is a unique, atmospheric and full of character venue. Located in the heart of Edinburgh, close to the secluded end of the street gardens and the picturesque and vibrant Princes Gardens, it makes just a perfect wedding venue.

Steph and Robbie started to look for an Edinburgh wedding photographer about a year before their big date. When the couple told me they had chosen Ghillie Dhu, I couldn’t congratulate them more. Weddings at this unique venue are amazingly well organised, run smoothly with the most professional Kirsty Bernard (one of the Wedding Planners at Ghillie Dhu), looking after the couple, guests and everything else.

The wedding day started with the usual bridal preps at the bride’s house. When I arrived, the bridesmaids were getting ready, chatting excitedly about what’s about to happen. The bride was nearly ready and we started to take some photos of her finishing touches, getting the dress on, fixing her jewellery. As a natural and candid wedding photographer, I obviously took lots of candid photos of what was happening, flowers, dress and all other important wedding details.

Finally the bride was ready, so were the bridesmaids. The father of the bride was waiting patiently all morning. Now, it was the moment when he finally got to see the beautiful bride. Those precious moments like this created the whole wedding. The girls were buzzing, gathering last things for the day. The wedding car was waiting outside. Soon, everybody were on their way to Ghillie Dhu.

In the meantime, the guys were already welcoming all arriving guests, trying to calm their nerves and taking the most of the moment. I arrived at the venue about half an hour before the bride. That gave me plenty of time to take photos of Ghillie Dhu from the in and outside, arriving guests and the emotional guys. As a photojournalistic wedding photographer, you’ve got to be in the middle of the action. With a venue like Ghillie Dhu, you’ll get the most dramatic surrounding for the best ‘wedding action’.

The stunning bride arrived slightly after the expected time. This is quite expected, especially when you get married in the heart of Edinburgh. We took a few quick photos of Steph coming out of the car and all present members of the bridal party. The ceremony was just about to begin. First came Violet. Yes, Violet. The cutest, bravest little girl who made everybody’s day. Later on that day, the best man started his speech with these words: “Welcome to the Violet’s show”. Yes, it was Violet’s day. Her daddy and mummy were getting married and she was enjoying the day in full. And here came the two year flower-girl Violet. When she saw her daddy at the altar, she went running down the aisle. Joy, happiness, tears, pure love. She was followed by the bridesmaids and the stunning bride herself.

The ceremony was simple and beautiful. Violet enjoyed herself and amused the guests. Steph and Robbie were relaxed, enjoyed every second of it. Then the usual signing and a little walk to the park for formal photos of the couple and groups, followed by the speeches and Wedding Breakfast.

As the day was passing by nicely, I kept taking natural photos of the relaxed guests. After dinner we went for another walk, to the stunning Princes Gardens for an evening session. The sun was going down, giving us amazing colours. It was a lovely evening. It didn’t took us long to take pictures with the most dramatic background, the Edinburgh Castle.

When the couple was strolling back to the venue, Kirsty and her troops were making sure the cake is ready for cutting and the floor for the first dance. After a few first dances we came outside for a little fun with sparklers. What a perfect finish to a perfect day!
